Preparing a captivating podcast interview
A good interview owes nothing to luck: it is won beforehand, in the preparation. Here is the method used by the shows that last, applicable from your next recording.
Prepare the guest, not just the questions
Listen to or read three recent pieces by your guest, and note what they have not told anywhere else: that is where your value lies. Send the broad themes in advance, never the exact questions: you want their thinking, not their recitation. Confirm duration, format and suggested outfit: a reassured guest is a generous guest.
The grid: 5 blocks, not 40 questions
Replace the question list with 5 thematic blocks, each with one opening question and two possible follow-ups. You keep the freedom to chase an interesting tangent without losing the thread. The best questions start with "how" and "why"; the worst can be answered with yes or no.
On the day: your only job is listening
In a supported studio, the tech no longer concerns you: the control room runs the 4 cameras and each mic's sound. Your added value is all in the listening: bouncing, digging, daring the silence that makes people elaborate. Our Galaxy and Cigar Lounge sets host up to 4 speakers on mic and camera, at no extra cost.
Think about the edit while recording
Have guests rephrase the start of answers ("Since when..." becomes "I have done this job since..."): every answer becomes a self-contained clip, perfect for the episode's promotional reels. Your edit gains rhythm, and your socials gain material.
